Why are you writing your EBook

“Create. Not for the money. Not for the fame. Not for the recognition. But for the pure joy of creating something and sharing it.” ~ Ernest Barbaric

Do you write to educate and inform your readers, or to entertain them?

Do you want to invoke an emotional response in your readers?

Do you want to make them laugh, cry, or terrorize their dreams?

Are you writing an eBook because you want to create your own reality filled with unique characters that you created from your imagination, and start them off on a journey of your choosing until they take on a life of their own?

After your characters become aware of their existence do you just watch it unfold and write about what they are doing?

When I write it is to get the voices inside of my head that are talking to me endlessly written down so I can have inner peace. These voices are creating a mental symphony inside of my head while they tell me their story, and they don’t stop until I write it down and let everyone know who they are.

When I say voices inside of my head I am not referring to a mental illness such as schizophrenia, not that there is anything inherently wrong with that, I have had several friends in the past that heard voices.

The most probable source of these voices or strong thought-forms if you will are coming from my imagination. I accept, however, there is a remote possibility that quantum physics, string theory, and alternate universes are facts, and the characters in my story are just as real in their universe as I am in mine.

Perhaps in my communications with the characters I write about they also see me as an imaginary character that they should write about as well. Imagine that, I could be a fictional character written about by someone who just may wonder if I exist in an alternate universe, or if I only exist in their imagination.

Stephen King Quote

Are you writing an eBook to educate and inform your readers?

If you intend to write an eBook or even an article about a subject you are trying to educate your readers about than you must be knowledgeable about the subject you are writing about or you will be doing your readers a disservice.

For example, if you spent your life working as an accountant and read several articles online about home electrical wiring because you want to install a ceiling fan, or do some other in-home electrical work, you should not be writing a book about how to do simple electrical work.

If you want to write an eBook involving accounting strategies great, but leave writing eBooks and articles about electrical work to electricians who have spent their lives doing that kind of work, or you may end up doing your readers more harm than good.

Another factor to consider is, do your readers care about the topic you are writing about.

You could be more knowledgeable about your subject matter than anybody else, but if nobody cares about it, nobody is going to want to read your eBook, let alone pay to read your eBook.

If the purpose of your eBook is to educate your readers make sure you are knowledgeable about the subject, and it is one that potential readers will find interesting.

Are You Writing an eBook to Entertain Your Readers?

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, and hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn't carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.” ~Stephen King

Writing fiction is quite different than non-fiction because the author has to use their imagination and creativity to grab their reader’s attention and hold their interest.

You have to make your readers care about your characters so they are more emotionally involved in your character’s plight. Giving your main character a likable personality so your readers feel as though your character is someone they could be friends with, or have empathy for is a great start before your character is thrust into the inciting incident.

If the main character is a serial killer, then you want your readers to hate and despise them so much they want to keep reading to find out if they get caught and their victims get the justice they deserve.

If you can create an emotion of animosity in your readers against the main character, and compassion for the people he targets and victimizes than you have done your job well.

Your readers want to feel emotion while reading your eBook, so go ahead and intrigue them, make them laugh, or cry. Use your imagination to lead your readers down a path that makes them feel angry, or better yet one that terrifies their dreams.
