Lawn Mower

“Your future is found in your daily routine. Successful people do daily what others do occasionally!” ~Paula White

Are you paying attention to your daily activities enough to write about them?

We all live our lives and have various daily activities that we meander through without giving it much thought. Seven days later unless we share something on social media, we will often forget what our activities were that day.

Pay attention to every moment, be mentally present in the now, or life just might pass you by.

Here is an excerpt from one of my days I would like to share with you. I had to be paying attention to and aware of the present moment that day. When you live in the woods, you never know what you will encounter.

Yard Work Time.

My alarm clock let out an annoying beeping sound. It is a sound that I have heard almost daily since I was in high school. They don’t make them like they used to, and this alarm clock has been interrupting my sleep for the past 30 years.

I smacked the snooze on my alarm just as I have since high school, my slightly damaged alarm clock remained silent for exactly nine minutes before reminding me again, it is time to awaken.

I knew full well that sleep inertia was the cause of my drowsiness, and all I had to do was force myself to get up out of bed to get my mind functioning again.

After turning off my alarm clock, I fumbled in my grogginess to turn on the lamp that was on my nightstand, but I knocked it over, which forced me to turn it upright again.

After a little inspiring self-talk, “Get up, you lazy bum!” I was finally able to get myself out of bed.

The first daily activity I take part in upon getting out of bed is to visit my good friend Mr. Coffee. One hot cup of coffee with premium quality half and half, and a sprinkle of sugar starts the day off right, or at least that is my opinion.

Today is my day off work, but a strong thunderstorm yesterday made a mess of my yard. Living on the outskirts of town on a few acres of land is quiet and peaceful, but numerous oak and pine trees do tend to leave a mess for you to clean.

I have to get up before the break of dawn to get a start on it, or the raging sun will make me regret my lackadaisical decision.

I must have a balance between waking my neighbors up, and finishing my yard work before old sol increases the temperature in my South Florida yard, and beats down upon my flesh with reckless abandon.

Picking up the big branches was the first project to avoid damage to my lawnmower, before raking up the smaller ones.

So there I was raking up small branches into piles with various debris before picking them up and placing them into a garbage can.

I was enjoying the fresh air in the early morning and whistling while I worked, The Final Countdown by Europe I believe it was until I heard a horrific noise.

The fresh air and the smell of damp pine were interrupted by the sound of a loud snapping noise and something hitting the ground, followed by heavy footsteps walking haphazardly away from it.

Those of us who live in the woods know, that was the sound of a bear climbing up a tree, the branch breaking, the bear hitting the ground, and then walking away. It is a safe bet the unfortunate bear is in a bad mood right about now.

I call break time! Another cup of coffee sounds better than staring down an angry bear.

One more cup of coffee even though it was hot, with a splash of cream, and a sprinkle of sugar was just what I needed to refresh my brain, and allow the bear to wander off.

I fired up my lawnmower which was just a push mower and imagined how much better a riding mower would be as I cut my lawn. I finished just as the sky began to darken with another round of storm clouds. Weed eating would have to wait.

Sharing our daily activities through our writing is not a difficult task, and it will help us to practice our writing skills. We as writers can show the world, we are no different than the average person.

We grumble as we get out of bed, we have a morning ritual, and we put our pants on one leg at a time.

Now it is your turn to share your daily activities and surroundings.

Describe the room you are in now and your living environment.

Do you live in a house or a condo?

What do you see when you walk outside? Do you see numerous neighbors, or is Mother Nature outside your door? Take a moment to look around you, and be aware of the present moment.

Now spend some time writing about what you are experiencing in your daily activities.
